Moving to Lindley: An Insider's Guide to HD3

On The Move Removals van loading at a terraced house during a removal job in Lindley

Lindley sits on a hill northwest of Huddersfield, about ten minutes from the town centre, fifteen minutes from the M62, and within easy reach of Bradford, Halifax, and Leeds. It is one of the most consistently popular places to live in the area, especially for families.

We move people in and out of Lindley most weeks. Here is what to know if you are about to join them.

The quick answer

Lindley moves are usually some of the most straightforward in the Huddersfield area. Wide enough streets, decent parking on most roads, mix of period terraces and 1930s semis with proper drives, and a postcode (HD3) close enough to our Golcar base that we are there in 15 minutes.

The complications, when they happen, are around the older terraced rows on the village high street and a few of the very narrow side streets. Most days, a Lindley move is a clean job.

If you are planning a Lindley move, WhatsApp Shaun, give him a call on 07873 405 938, or drop him an email at [email protected] with your address. He will come round to walk the rooms in person and write up a free quote.

What Lindley actually is

Lindley is technically a village, though most people who live in Huddersfield treat it as a suburb. It has a clear high street (Lidget Street running into Acre Street), a clock tower at the top end, an Edwardian library, a handful of pubs, several decent cafés, a Tesco Express, a cluster of independents, and a slightly weathered cinema converted into a community space.

The architecture is mainly Victorian terraces nearer the high street and 1920s to 1950s semi-detached and detached houses spreading out on the surrounding streets. There is a smaller pocket of new-build at the edges. Most properties are stone or brick.

The hospital (Huddersfield Royal Infirmary) is in Lindley, which means a lot of medical staff live nearby. This shapes the rental market and creates steady demand for both buying and renting.

Why families move to Lindley

A few reasons that come up consistently when we talk to people moving in.

Schools. Lindley Junior and Infant School (rated outstanding) and Salendine Nook High School are the catchment schools. Lindley Junior has been heavily oversubscribed for years, which has driven up prices in the immediate streets around the school.

Easy commute. Junction 23 of the M62 is six minutes by car. Trains from Huddersfield station (a 12-minute drive or 25-minute walk away) get you to Manchester Victoria in 35 minutes or Leeds in 20.

Walkable village high street. A real high street with independent shops, pubs, and cafés rather than just a row of estate agents and takeaways. People who move from cities to Huddersfield often pick Lindley specifically for this.

Mix of housing types. Smaller terraces if you want to be in the village, bigger detached houses on the outer streets if you have a family. Both within five minutes' walk of each other.

Why moves to Lindley are usually clean

We have a phrase for moves that go well: "smooth start to finish." Lindley fits that category most of the time.

Wide enough streets. Outside of one or two narrow side streets near the high street, our 7.5-tonne lorry fits comfortably on most Lindley roads.

Off-street parking. A lot of Lindley properties (especially the 1920s to 1950s housing stock) have proper drives or off-street spaces. That speeds up loading enormously.

Sensible house layouts. The stairs and doorways in most Lindley houses are wider than the upper-valley terraces. Big furniture goes in without dismantling.

Short distance from us. We are based in Golcar, fifteen minutes away. We can be on site early if needed.

The areas where Lindley moves get more interesting are the older terraced rows on Lidget Street, Acre Street, and a couple of the narrow streets behind the high street. There, parking is street-only and tighter. We sometimes use a smaller vehicle and shuttle from the corner.

Areas within Lindley

A quick guide for people who do not yet know it well.

Lindley village (Lidget Street, Acre Street, Holly Bank Road). The historic heart. Stone terraces, the high street, the clock tower. Most walkable. Tightest parking.

Around the school (Wellington Road, Field Head, Birkby). Family streets, mostly semis with drives. Most popular with school-catchment buyers, so prices are higher here.

Salendine Nook (just up the hill). A bit further out, mainly larger detached houses, easier parking still. Slightly removed from the village feel but only a few minutes' drive in.

Out towards Outlane and Mount. Edge of Lindley, more 1930s and post-war housing, lots of garden space, easy access from junction 23 of the M62. Quieter, less walkable, but well-connected by car.

Edgerton and Birkby (just south). Not strictly Lindley but often considered part of the same area. Beautiful Victorian villas, tree-lined streets, very strong demand.

When you tell us your address, we will know which Lindley you are moving into.

What to send us for a quote

Standard list:

  • Your address
  • Floor level (relevant for the few flats above the high street)
  • Off-street parking or on-street?
  • Move date and any timing constraints

For Lindley moves, Shaun comes round in person. About 15 minutes from our Golcar base. He will walk the rooms, look at the parking and the access, and write up a quote based on what he actually sees, rather than a postcode and a "three bedrooms" guess.

How we price Lindley moves

Lindley is close to us, so most jobs are charged at our standard hourly rate of £70 with a 2-hour minimum. For larger family-house moves with bigger vans and bigger crews, we will sometimes quote a fixed-day price where it works out cheaper for you. Either way, the price is the price. We do not add anything on the day.

For wider context on what drives a removals quote in this area, see our removals cost guide and our house removals service page.

When Lindley families move out

Most Lindley moves we do are people moving in. A few common moves out:

Up to a bigger family home. Often within Lindley itself or to nearby Salendine Nook, Outlane, or Edgerton. Same area, more space.

Out of Huddersfield entirely. London, Manchester, the southwest. We do nationwide jobs from Lindley most months. See our nationwide removals page for what is included.

Downsizing. Empty-nesters moving from the larger family streets to a smaller terrace or apartment. We see this a lot.

For a wider read on the Huddersfield area, our Moving to Huddersfield guide covers other suburbs to consider, and the Huddersfield removals page covers what we do across HD postcodes.

How to book a Lindley move

Three ways to reach Shaun: WhatsApp him, call 07873 405 938, or email [email protected]. He will come round to your Lindley address in person, usually within a day or two, and you will have a free written quote shortly after. We are 15 minutes from any HD3 street, so even short-notice jobs are usually possible.

Lindley moves are some of our easiest. Wide streets, decent parking, and a Bombay Spice for tea afterward if the timing works out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Lindley so popular with families?
Three reasons mainly: a strongly-rated village school (Lindley Junior and Infant), a real high street with independent shops and pubs, and an easy commute to Manchester or Leeds via the M62 and Huddersfield train station. The combination is rare in the area, which is why demand stays steady.
What postcode is Lindley?
Lindley is HD3. The postcode also covers parts of Salendine Nook, Outlane, and Mount. When booking a move, the full postcode and street name help us check exact access. Some HD3 streets are wide and easy, others are tighter terraced rows where parking needs planning.
Is parking a problem in Lindley?
On most Lindley streets, no. The 1920s to 1950s semis usually have proper drives. The older terraces along the village high street are tighter and have on-street parking only. We will know which from your address and adjust the vehicle and crew accordingly.
How long does a Lindley move take?
For a typical 3-bed semi with a drive, around 5 to 6 hours with two crew. Larger detached houses can be a full day. Smaller flats above the high street, often 3 to 4 hours. Lindley is one of the cleaner Huddersfield areas to move into, so most jobs run on time.
Do you cover Salendine Nook and Edgerton too?
Yes, regularly. Salendine Nook sits just above Lindley and Edgerton is a few minutes south. Both are in our standard service area and quoted the same way as Lindley itself. The travel from our Golcar base is 15 to 20 minutes.
